CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX GIFTS

This is an amazing story of generosity and good will

The students, parents and teachers from Jingili and Leanyer primary schools in Darwin, spontaneously arranged for the collected of Christmas gifts to be sent to the needy children of Timor.

The students, parents and teachers were encouraged to collect small items to fill a shoebox. The box was then covered with Christmas paper and a message was written on the out side of the box saying the particular age of a child their box would be most suitable for.

During the last week of the school year both schools presented the Christmas shoebox gifts to East Timor Sunrise Inc. It was absolutely amazing and a wonderful experience to have the privilege of receiving over 300 Christmas Shoebox gifts on behalf of the needy children of East Timor.

Then we had to solve a number of logistical problems to ensure the needy children in Timor received these wonderful gifts.

Through the generosity of Air North and Connico Phillips all the boxes were delivered to Dili on 24 December, Mr Mike Gallagher, the NT government representative in East Timor facilitated the delivery of the goods in Dili. The gifts were given to children who live in an orphanage in Dili. Sisters from the Canossian Order run the orphanage. The Sisters were overwhelmed by the generosity of the children from Darwin and the gifts were giving out at a special gift-giving day.

Some things that particularly impressed the Sisters were:

1. Each box was gift wrapped on the outside

2. Most of the gifts inside each box were individually wrapped

3. Each box was clearly marked with the age and sometimes sex of the child the gift box would be most suitable for

4. That the people of Darwin would send such wonderful gifts to children they did not know

Students, parents and teachers of Jingili and Leanyer Primary Schools you have touched the lives of some beautiful children in Dili and we thank you for your generous spirit.

Lynne Bigg
